Practical guide
Practice three simple cuts
Build control before taking on a detailed pattern.
Use a shallow slicing cut
A light slicing motion removes a thin shaving with less force than a deep push. Work away from your body and supporting fingers. If a cut needs heavy pressure, reduce its depth and check the edge and grain direction.
Make a stop cut
A stop cut defines an edge where another cut should end. Keep it shallow at first. Remove waste toward that boundary a little at a time so the blade does not carry past the intended line.
Combine cuts on scrap
Draw a few straight lines and a shallow notch on a spare blank. Practice stopping at the line and creating a clean surface. Repeat the same small exercise rather than judging progress only by a finished project.
